An infection that affects the root portion of the eyelash; stye is characterized by a swollen red lump located on the eyelid and usually filled with pus. Because of this, soreness can be experienced in the eyelid and can be worsened if the entire eyelid becomes inflamed and red.

Causes of Stye

There is no known cause for stye. The usual suspect is the bacterium Staphylococcus, a common germ usually found on healthy skin. In most cases, it does not cause any harm but sometimes the bacterium enters the skin and causes infections like boils and abscesses.

Treatment of Stye

If you are suffering from stye, you can consider the following cures:

  • Hot compress – this is effective in relieving soreness and clearing pus. Make sure that you use a clean flannel which has been soaked in hot water. Place the warm flannel gently over the affected eye for 20 minutes and do this 3 to 4 times daily until the swelling recedes.
  • Antibiotic ointment – you can choose to put this if the stye failed to clear after a couple of days.
  • Antibiotic medicine – if the stye still does not clear with the above treatments, you can opt to take antibiotics.

Prevention of Stye

In order to prevent spreading of the infection, you should remember to:

  • Avoid sharing your towels or facecloths with anyone
  • Wash hands especially after you touch the eyelid that is affected.
